Understanding MLM Prospects by David Ledoux
Are you struggling to understand your mlm prospects? Why do they do they things they do, and not do the things they say they'd do?
When it comes to building downlines in multi-level marketing, the old adage, "never judge a book by its cover" are wise words to heed.
Ambitious people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, ages, and backgrounds. They may be loud, charismatic and outgoing or shy and reserved. You can't tell who has the burn to press on through adversity when building a business.
In the game of poker, when an adversary pretends to have a good hand, they usually are weak. You see the same thing in MLM. Guys who talk a great game are often missing after the break. They say things like, "sit back and relax, because I am going to make you rich!" If you're smiling and nodding while reading this, I can only assume you've met this guy. He gets around alot....
Actions always speak louder than words when building a business. Give out small tasks and monitor their performance. Leadership shows itself through the completion of tasks. Watch for men and women who give their word, and then honor it.
Above all else, keep the game of mlm lead generation, recruiting and downline training fun!

MLM Lead Generation Case Study Finished
I just finished the May 2005 edition of The Razor's Edge. This is my monthly newsletter that focuses on wealth creation, time management and better living.
This month there is a lot of emphasis on mlm lead generation with specific case study examples. If you know someone involved in network marketing or MLM they will find it facinating.
I helped a friend of mine create 11 appointments in 9 days within 4 blocks of his home with cold market prospects. Facinating stuff.
I was struck by how scared people are out there. Living paycheck to paycheck is a way of life for so many....what hit me was the day before paycheck they literally have no money...none, not a cent.
Opportunity seekers are all around us, aren't they?

More on Yahoo's Shift
A friend asked me how I know if Yahoo affected my sites. There is a command string that you can type into the yahoo search bar like this:
site:yourdomain.com
This also works in google and msn.
It will show you your pages that are currently in their index. So if you had a site with 100 pages in Yahoo last month, and now you only have 40, you lost 60% of your soldiers.
Plus, the 40 remaining may have moved up or down for certain search phrases, also affecting your traffic. Free traffic is so unpredictable!
BTW, if you search "poking update" in Google, look who's #1...too bad nobody searches that phrase.

Did Yahoo Affect You?
On or around April 1st the venerable giant search engine Yahoo played an interesting April Fool's Day joke...they totally reindexed and reshuffled their engine.
Sites that had ranked well for years vanished, some sites went up, some went down, it was chaos and bedlam. I estimate my traffic was impacted about 15%.
Things seem to slowly be getting back to normal over there.
I know some guys who lost sites that were making them $5000 a month or more in traffic...poof! no longer indexed. And clean sites to boot, no black hat SEO stuff.

Usana Products and Usana Vitamins in Google?
I was recently watching an mlm discussion forum and a guy was saying that a prospect should join his team because he was first in google for the term Usana Vitamins and #2 for Usana Products.
I thought that was a strange arguement. And then I realized that all arguements are strange.
I remember about 10 years ago everyone was arguing about a special 3.5" floppy disk that only one group was using to build their MLM downline. It had a cartoon movie, and in its day was pretty unique. Some groups who didn't have the disk wanted access to it. Some wanted to switch lines. Other groups wanted the disk banned as unfair competition.
Needless to say, the special disk no longer exists not because of unfair competition, but because of the freedom of free enterprise. The marketplace decided that the disk was actually kind of pathetic and really didn't magically build a downline after all. It died out of its own volition.
The guys who promoted the disk as a magical and effortless way to build a fortune in network marketing are no longer around.
There are many reasons to join a downline. And many reasons not. Finding the right sponsor to help you is as personal as the weather.
Will I ever be #1 in Google for Usana Vitamins ? No, I doubt it. Will Google even be relevant to building a downline in 5 years? I don't know....but I remember the cartoon disk that everyone said you had to have in order to get rich...
I remember when Alta Vista was the greatest search engine of them all...don't hear about anyone bragging about being #1 there do you?
I made a fortune with Usana products because I showed the plan to about 1500 people, and about 90 of them said YES, and about 20 of them did something about it. It took 5 years of hard work, and YES, it was totally worth it.

Poking Update
On the 17th my business associate and I placed 750 sizzle cards in about 5 dozen bus shelters.
In a week I have received 32 calls, have done 4 appointments, and have more than a dozen more in the pipeline. All within a 10 minute drive of my home.
Well?

10 MLM Prospects "In Play" At All Times by David Ledoux
One of the secrets to building a huge MLM downline is to constantly have prospects "in play". By that I mean have people who have raised their hands to look at an opportunity, and are in the process of looking and being followed up.
Take a prospect to a logical "yes" or "no" conclusion in as short a period of time as possible. Have at least 10 prospects in this process at all times.

Blog Spam Anyone?
Brad Fallon of Stomping The Search Engines fame has a forum-like discussion going on that I find to be amusing. The title of the discussion is named Interview with a Blog Spammer, where Brad links to an interview of Todd "Oilman" Friesen. Brad says as follows:
One point is that the most successful spammers eventually go white hat -- short term, less money, long term they get to stay around. Did you know that many of the current internet marketing gurus started out as rank email spammers? True story.
If you continue to read the thread, you will fine some of the funniest comments ever. Forum members basically drop real remarks and then a spammy like link that follows. My favorite comment is by Max on April 20, 2005 at 03:50 PM.

More Thoughts On Poking....
I did my little bus shelter experiment... 50 flyers with 10 sizzle cards per flyer in bus shelters.
I have had 19 calls in the past 48 hours. I have done 1 presentation last night, and have 3 more today. Half the prospects I haven't spoken to yet....
It's like a python swallowing a beachball....a huge burst of local activity. Fun stuff, yes?

Are You Tired Of Taking The Bus?
I've always believed that you had to be part "crazy mad scientist" to do well at network marketing....later tonight I am going to put that theory to the test.
A business associate and I are going out around 10 pm tonight to test what happens when you poke a target market where it hurts....
Which target market? The commuters that take the bus to work each morning.
Where are we poking them? Right in the bus shelter.
How? With a bus shelter pouch.
A what?
A bus shelter pouch. You take a single 1 page flier printed with your message and fold up the bottom inch of the flier. You staple it at both edges of the fold and in the middle, thereby creating two perfect sized pouches to hold sizzle cards.
What does it say?
===================================================================
===================================================================
ARE YOU TIRED OF TAKING THE BUS?
Would you like to have the money to purchase a new car?
EARN A FULL-TIME INCOME ON A PART-TIME BASIS. Call now and listen to what these people have done! (3 min. message)
1-888-363-9470
================================================================
================================================================
I am putting 5 sizzle cards in each pouch. We plan to do 50 pouches as an experiment. Each sizzle card is coded with a unique number so we know where each call came from.
That will be 500 sizzle cards placed. If we do that Monday to Thursday and Sunday evening, that's 2500 cards a week or 10,000 cards a month....based on my calculations that will give my business associate more leads than he can handle and energize his business.
What are YOU doing at 10pm tonight?

My MLM Predictions for 2009
Are Impatient Parasites Killing Network Marketing? My MLM Predictions for 2009.
by David Ledoux
Oh, hello! I didn't know you were coming over. Come on in, let's eat something. I have a bag of those blue tortilla chips, and a bottle of hotsauce. It may hurt a little tomorrow, but it will taste great now! You munch, I'll tell you a story about multi-level madness.
When I got started "in the bidness" back in '88, we didn't have them fancy dvd's, the internet or even tapes. We did everything face to face. It was cheaper. Long distance was nearly a buck a minute in those days.
I remember standing on a busy street corner freezing my butt off in February in Toronto. It was minus 20 and people would sprint past me like speed walkers, trying to catch their subway or get indoors before they got frostbite and their nose turned blue and fell off. And there I was handing little sizzle cards to anyone that would take one. About every 4th person would snatch it, jam it into their pocket and keep moving.
If I dressed really warm, and stamped my feet, I could last about 45 minutes. Enough time to get 300 cards handed out. I'd then head for the subway. It was always the most depressing time. I'd see about 280 of my 300 cards lying on the ground getting mashed into paste with the road salt, snow and mud.
I'd shiver my way back to my little dorm room, keeping my fingers crossed. And sure enough, by the time I got home I'd have 3 or 4 leads on my answering machine. I'd call them back, and invite them to the opportunity meeting at the hotel every Tuesday and Thursday.
That's the way "the bidness" was done. For every 1000 cards or fliers you handed out, you sponsored about 2 people. And then you taught them to do the same thing. You'd help your people with their people. If your people's people got people, you'd help their people. A good recruiter might sponsor 10 people a year personally, but hundreds in depth.
But anytime you sponsored people, you'd help them get people. Depth was everything. You disciplined yourself for 2-5 years in order to build a long-term residual income.
Come forward in time with me 17 years. Make your hands wave in front of your face like Garth in Wayne's World. Make the noise if you like... "Dooladooooo! Doooladoooo! Doooladoo!". Okay, right on, welcome to 2005.
Today an entire crop of networkers have never left the house. They sit in their home office with a headset on in front of a computer. They buy dead genealogy lists of defunct companies with the ease of a single phone call and their visa. They "pound" the phones trolling for their next sucker, er victim, er I mean recruit. They learn the "attack phase" and 101 "closing" techniques.
For many, gone are the days of investing 2 or 3 years to build depth in order to tap residual income. These parasites have latched onto the networking industry like lamprey eels, sucking the life out of it. They use quasi-legal compensation plans and dubious digital product bundles to portray legitimacy. Their paradigm is sell a $1500 or $5000 bundle now, make the quick 80%, and move on. If your new customer sells one or two themselves, you get them anyhow with the good old "2-up rollup".
I watched this whole breed birthed about a decade ago. Burned-out mlmers were looking for a way to make some fast cash and paydown their visas. Anyone remember Commonwealth, Delphin, Passport To Adventure or Fortune in Motion? The tickets got bigger, the cash faster, the addiction more insidious.
A very wise business mentor of mine explained it to me this way: if you work hard on a business for 18-36 months, then took a year off and moved to a tropical island for 6 months, would you still have a business when you came back? Would your income continue to flow? If yes, then you had a business. If no, then you had a job.
You see these guys all over the web, spewing their "wisdom" and boasting about their $5000 weeks in their first 90 days.
They brag about how they don't do meetings, don't draw circles, don't do 3-way calls, don't sell anything and how easy it all is. They warn that if aren't recruting 20 people a month, then YOU are the problem...and they'll gladly teach you how to fix your problem for a few grand.
How do I know? I got sucked into their world more than once. I believed the hype and drank the un-kool-aid. I used the faxes, email, flash movies and conference calls like a crack addict uses the pipe. I know of what I speak. Technology has created a massive illusion in network marketing over the last decade.
But more and more people are pulling back the curtain. More and more networkers are realizing that conference calls, email blasts, and cold calling lead lists are not working. They are missing the fun, the friendship, and the associations that this industry was built on.
Here's my predictions for the second half of the decade. Check back in 2009 and see how I did:
1.) Retail will drive MLM. Companies with real products and real customers will flourish. Training that teaches basic direct sales skills will be in vogue. Companies with massive customer bases will outlast and outgrow the hype-driven ones.
2.) People to people will return. The world of online chat rooms will be left for the socially disfunctional who play the fast money offshore games. Real companies with real products will grow through coffee-shops and kitchen tables, rallies and conventions.
3) Two-up money game deals will still be around. Just none of the ones that are around today. Fast money has always lurked around the fringes. But after the pool of suckers have all bought the $500 teleseminar, the $1500 personal development ebook bundle and the $5000 offshore seminar, then what? A lot of guys will disagree. But 2009 isn't that far off, we can just take a roll call and see the score then. If you're in a 2-up money game, then if I'm wrong, you'll still be on the phone working a sales job selling crap in 2009. If I'm right, then you'll be on the phone working a sales job selling crap, just different crap. Get off the pipe! Join a real company, work hard part time and build a real residual cashflow with loyal
lifetime customers.
4) Prelaunch startups will NOT be hot anymore. People know that joining a prelaunch deal only makes the company owners and the top heavy hitters rich. The prelaunch hype about 6 out of 7 mlm millionaires joining in the first 19 months is a fallacy. You'll see the exact opposite by 2009. Joining older, established companies that already have all the systems, tools, training and leadership in place to do the heavy lifting will be the ones seeing the growth.
5) Monster recruiting will be out, working depth will be in. As the technology to strip-mine lead lists and throw spagetti against the mlm wall loses its effectiveness, quality will replace quantity. Sponsoring 20 a month yourself will be uncool, driving a leg 20 levels deep in a month with 20 bonus check earners will be the mark of a real player.
6) If you're still with the same MLM company in 2009 as you are when you read this in April 2005, then you probably have a nice residual income. Congratulations. Keep growing it.
Whew! Predicting the future is hard work. These snacks are making me thirsty. I see you're nearly out of chips. Hope that hot sauce wasn't too hot. It's called "Your Mama!".
I appreciate you. Drop by next week and we'll talk MLM again...

Who Is The #1 MLM Trainer In The World?
About a year ago a web genius named Brad Fallon released a fantastic search engine training program on CD called Stomping The Search Engines. I learned a ton about getting free traffic from Google, Yahoo, and the other search engines from him.
You can read his blog at Brad Fallon Blog
He taught me how to optimize for certain phrases on Google. For example if you search "#1 MLM Trainer" in Google, the top 2 slots currently come up with my sites. If you search "#1 MLM Trainer In The World" I have #1 for that too.
It's interesting to see how many plain jane blog entries are chasing my highly optimized links. A guy wrote about Michael Oliver, a great sales trainer, and suddenly he's number 3. The guy must have a highly ranked blog, one more reason you need one!
Of course, it's purely for entertainment and ego. No one searches that string consistently. But it's fun.

Do Autoresponders Still Work?
The short answer is "ABSOLUTELY!".
But....there's always a but. You must pick the right company. The days of running your own autobot on your desktop with some cheap script is over. If you spend a long time building your optin lists, you want a company that's dependable, been in business for a while, and also, and probably most importantly, can get whitelisted with ISP's and can get their email delivered through the spam filters.
Aweber is rock solid. I have used ProAutoresponder for about 4 years now. I like their customizable landing pages for optin.
Think of an autoresponder like an employee....do you want a hard-working dependable one or a slacker?

Who Are We Looking For?
I just wanted to throw out an idea for you in regards to who we are looking for.
I've always maintained that about 80% of my time should be spent looking for 4-15 individuals who are obsessed with becoming six-figure earners in network marketing...the challenge is I don't know what they look like. Some pretty good ones start off with long hair, earnings, and metallica tshirts....
When you enroll a new member, do you know if they are going to be any good? I never did. But here's what I did know....if they joined and did nothing, they were a customer first thanks to autoship.
"Just because they are in your downline doesn't mean they are IN..."
Before they can ever be IN, they have to be on autoship taking the products....they sign up because they have a dream, then life gets in the way and they stop doing the business, but they stay on products for a long time.
Here's a true story that might help. Yesterday I did a 1on1 for a young Jamacain girl...in her early twenties in nursing school, dead broke but ambitious. She wants to sign up, wants the product, wants to do the business but doesn't even have $30 to buy a kit....
"I've been looking for you for 6 months!" I said. "Let me show you how to do this with no money."
We made a list of every name in her cell phone. She booked her first 2 on1 with me at McDonalds for Thursday at 3 pm. We are going to dig down through her warm market into their warm market and drive a leg deep until we find gold. I left the meeting with 15 names and numbers, and another meeting booked. Mission accomplished.
Here's the way my sponsor trained me back in 1988.... whoever shows the plan the most wins.

Solar Powered Car
I was reading the February 2005 issue of Wired and they showed two guys from Quebec who built a solar-powered car for under $1500.
My buddy who built my Harley-Indian conversion and I talked about building one this summer and driving around town with a big sign on it promoting his MLM business.
It has a top speed of about 20 mph, slower than a bike but faster than a skateboard....

Having A Blast With Sizzle Cards
Are you bored of network marketing? Are you looking to add some PIZZAZ to your MLM business?
Let's face it...we've all been there. Anything repetitive can become monotonous...even cashing huge bonus checks. Here's a tip that can inject some fun into your MLM adventure.
Get yourself 2000 sizzle cards from Growth Pro
and get them out in 10-14 days....your voicemail will be jammed, and I mean jammed!
I've been split testing green cards and orange cards...the orange cards are in the lead after 6 days and 500 of each placed. 6 Days, 1000 cards, 14 leads, 3 hot, 2 appointments, 1 in. Could you live with those numbers if they were predictable, repeatable and duplicatable?
Hello? Is this thing on?
Do your downline and multi-level business a favor - Growth Pro
I'll have more stats, tips, analysis and case studies in the days ahead on this technique. For now let me just say it's probably the simplest way to have a huge impact on the momentum of your bonus check over the next 90 days.

What To Do When You Are Too Broke To Do Network Marketing
We've all been there...tapped for cash, credit cards crying, penny jar on empty. How can you build a business when you can barely eat?
This article might give you a few ideas....
What To Do When You Are Too Broke To Do Network Marketing OR...You Need Hot Prospects NOW Without Paying A Cent For Them!
by David Ledoux
"Oh my God!" I exclaimed via Yahoo Instant Messenger. "That's freaking brilliant mate!"
It's hard to convey an Australian accent via Yahoo Instant Messenger but I gave it my best shot. A good friend in Melbourne had just blown my mind with a new idea for lead generation for network marketing.
He's 29, his wife is 24. Great young couple. They were just moving out of their apartment into a new home. Real estate is BOOMING in Australia, and they are renting their flat as an income property. Of course came the inevitable MOVE...do YOU like moving?
I kinda do. A chance to throw junk out...it's amazing how much STUFF we accumulate in our lives. My AUssie buddy had a different idea, a brilliant idea.
He sold all his crap on Ebay.
No big earth-shattering idea...lots of people sell stuff on Ebay, right?
Here's the brilliant marketing part...each successful bidder got a free marketing CD from his MLM business! The cost of the Cd is absorbed by the profit in shipping and selling the junk he was going to throw out anyhow!
He has the prospects name, email and phone number. It's ridiculously easy to follow-up with them. With each CD was a killer sales letter, short and punchy, that made listening to the audio IRRESISTIBLE!
Tell me, honestly is that brilliant or what?
Now NO ONE is too broke to join your downline...no one has an excuse why they can't generate leads. We all have junk stuffing the closets and basements of our homes. Turn the junk into cash AND leads.
Uh-oh.
I just took away a big excuse...no money.
Here's a great question for you....How can I take action NOW based on this article?
Here's the second big lesson of this story...there really are NO EXCUSES! Just lack of internal movtivation caused by fear and an unclear vision....but that's a whole story for another day!
I think I may go buy some Ebay shares....
I appreciate you!

Hey You Look Smart, Can I Ask You A Question? Which One, A or B?
"Hey You Look Smart, Can I Ask You A Question? Which One, A or B?"
By David Ledoux
Good grief, you look famished! Come on in, let me fix you a quick bite. All I have is hotdogs, and my wife is out. Sit down and relax, and I'll microwave you 2 dogs. Mustard and ketchup?
While you're enjoying those Ballpark Franks, let me tell you a quick story about my latest prospecting adventures. I've figured out a way to get 2-3 prospects a day doing almost nothing.
I've been testing two varieties of sizzle cards from the boys over at Growth Pro . One is bright orange, and one is bright green.
I live my daily rockstar life, and incorporate a "Killer Question" at every opportunity. This morning before my workout I went to Starbucks for a Solo Expresso. The girl behind the cash register was friendly, and they were slow so no one was waiting. I saw my chance to ask my "Killer Question". I gave her my million dollar smile, and pulled two cards out of my pocket.
"Hey, you look smart. Let me ask you a question. I just got new business cards. Which do you like better, A or B?".
I gave her both samples.
It was facinating. She clutched both, scanning back and forth. And then she said "B".
"Thanks! Why did you pick B?"
"The word 'tired' jumped out at me."
The headline read "Are You Tired Of Living Paycheck To Paycheck?". It was 11 am and she was already tired of her shift. Very interesting.
I smiled, thanked her, took my expresso, and said, "Keep those cards. They'll bring you good luck."
I do this when I get gas for my Mercedes, when I go look at plasma tvs and new laptops at Best Buy, when I go get a haircut or buy gum, and basically any chance I get.
I find for every 100 cards I put out in this fashion, I get about 8 prospects. I'm really just rolling this out, so I'll let you know when I have more numbers to analyze. The key is to give them a choice. It seems to relax their defenses and put their mind into "do-me-a-favor" mode. You may want to try this at home!
How's that hotdog? Did it take the edge off your hunger pangs? Good.
I've got to go. I want to go check out a new stereo system, and I bet I can ask my "Killer Question" a few times.
I appreciate you!

I bought a fantastic home study course last summer called "Traffic Secrets". A young genius named John Reese created it. He's the real deal, a certified internet marketing bajillionaire.
He asked me for a testimonial awhile back, and I obliged. I forgot about it until all the buzz recently about the course's relaunch. I was pleasantly shocked to see my smiling mug at the top of his sales page!
